KDU setup

There are two types of KDU's.  One has a RJ45 connector for use with the EPL portable printers such as the Transport or Xport.  The second has a 9 pin serial connector for use with the desktop EPL printers with a serial port available.

The printer communication settings must be set to 9600 Baud, No Parity, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit.  The KDU has an auxiliary port for connecting items such as scanners or scales.  This device must be set to 4800 Baud, Odd Parity, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit.

For G Series Printers there is a adapter for the KDU Part #105850-026.

The KDU cannot send EPL to the printer.  It is only capable of entering basic text in response to prompts from the printer.  The format below is a simple example of a label format that can be downloaded to the printer.  It will prompt the KDU for information to complete variable fields in the format.

Example for a 1" h x 4"w  label:

FK"ADDRESS"
FS"ADDRESS"
V00,30,N,"Name"
V01,30,N,"Address"
V02,20,N,"City"
V03,2,N,"State"
V04,10,N,"Zip"
A69,22,0,4,1,1,N,V00
A71,75,0,4,1,1,N,V01
A71,130,0,4,1,1,N,V02
A404,130,0,4,1,1,N,V03
A445,128,0,4,1,1,N,V04

Troubleshooting:

  1. Check the communication settings on the printer.  If the printer is set incorrectly, the KDU will lock up.
  2. Check the cable connection
  3. Try a different KDU
  4. Try a different Printer
  5. Review the label format if possible, look for programming errors.  Common error, if a prompt is left empty "" then the KDU will not respond.
