Zebra Desktop Printer Firmware Download Procedure.

Downloading Methods

Note: If this is a shipping vendor printer (UPS, FED-Ex and so on) consult with the vendor support before upgrading the firmware. These printers can be identified by looking at the part number on the printer serial number label. Numbers beginning with an Part Number of 120xxx-xxx are not to be upgraded without consulting with the appropriate shipping vendor support organization.

The firmware can be downloaded to the printer using either of the following two methods:

  1. Primary: Use the Zebra Setup Utility.    This is the easiest and preferred  method to send firmware and files directly to printers, over a network, USB, RS-232 or Parallel port connections. Using the utility is very straight forward.  See link for example of sending a file to printer,  Sending firmware with ZSU.
  2. Alternate: From the DOS prompt using the COPY command. Instructions for this method using serial or parallel communications are detailed below.

*IMPORTANT NOTICES!*

! Printer must be in PAGE mode for the flash to work.  If you cannot get the printer into PAGE mode or you get an Red LED on power-up, see Notes at bottom.

! Failure to follow the instructions below will cause the firmware to be corrupted.

Before starting the firmware download, ensure only ONE communication cable is connected to the printer. When using a printer that has an internal or external Print Server :- Power on the printer and wait up to one minute for the Print Server boot sequence to complete. This is indicated by a GREEN LED.

Method 2:

For Parallel Communications

1) Apply power to the printer by pushing the on/off power switch to the on position. The power/error indicator will be in the green state.

2) Connect the parallel communications cable from the computers parallel port to the printers Centronics interface.

(Part number: 300016-006. Parallel interface cable, 6 Ft.)
(Part number: 300016-010. Parallel interface cable, 10 Ft.)

3) Use the DOS "MODE" command to configure the computer parallel port if necessary. See PC user documentation for details.

4) Copy the firmware file from the computer to the printer.

Example: COPY FILENAME.PRG LPT1: /B

5) After the computer displays the message: 1 file(s) copied, wait until the power/error indicator of the printer stays in the green state.

6) Turn off the power to the printer. Disconnect the parallel communication cable from the printer.

7) Perform the AUTOSENSE PROCEDURE and visually verify the firmware version printed on the configuration label.  Important Note:  This also resets the printer's sensors for proper operation.  Failure to run the autosense after a firmware download can cause error conditions.

For Serial Communications

1) Apply power to the printer by pushing the on/off power switch to the on position. The power/error indicator will be in the green state.

2) Connect the serial communications cable from the computer serial port to the printers DB9/F serial interface connector.

(Part number: 300017-006. Serial interface cable, DB-9 to DB-9, 6 Ft.).
(Part number: 300017-010. Serial interface cable, DB-9 to DB-9, 10 Ft.).
(Part number: 300018-006. Serial interface cable, DB-25 to DB-9, 6 Ft.).

3) Use the DOS "MODE" command to configure the computer serial parameters to be the same as the printer.

Example: MODE COM1:96,N,8,1,R

4) Copy the firmware file from the computer to the printer.

Example: COPY FILENAME.PRG COM1: /B

5) After the computer displays the message: 1 file(s) copied, wait until the power/error indicator of the printer stays in the green state.

6) Turn off the power to the printer; disconnect the serial communication cable from the printer.

7) Perform the AUTOSENSE PROCEDURE and visually verify the firmware version printed on the configuration label.  Important Note:  This also resets the printer's sensors for proper operation.  Failure to run the autosense after a firmware download can cause error conditions.

Notes: The firmware download can take up to 10 minutes when using the serial port. The parallel port must be configured as Standard, not EPP or ECP; otherwise the download may fail. In some cases it will be necessary to put the printer in the flash mode for the download to complete successfully. To do this, power up the printer while holding down the feed key and continue holding until the light becomes a solid red or amber; depending on the printer model. On the 2746 and 146 the error light comes on solid.
