Zebra 105SL Printer FAQ

Connectivity

Find discussions on different connectivity options, cable specifications and setup instructions.

  1. How do I set up my printer to print via parallel port?
  2. An IEEE 1284 compatible bi-directional parallel data cable is required when this communication method is selected. The required cable must have a standard 36-pin parallel connector on one end, which is plugged into the mating connector located inside the access opening on the left side of the printer. The parallel interface cable is connected using bail clips instead of screws. The other end of the parallel interface cable connects to the printer parallel connector at the host device.

Do no use enhanced settings such as EPP or ECP. These are bi-directional and the printer does not support bi-directional communications. Check your PC documentation or contact your PC manufacturer for instructions on changing this setting on you PC.

  3. How do I set up my printer to print via serial port?
  4. Printers with serial numbers up to 6400356 will have a DB25 serial connector as standard. Printers with serial numbers after 6400356 will have a DB9 serial connector as standard.  The cable needed to interface the printer to the host will be one of two types -- standard or null modem -- depending on the specific interface requirements. Connection to a PC requires a null modem cable.

  5. How do I set my printer up to print via USB?
  6. The 105SL does not support USB printing. To use the USB port on your PC, you will need a third party converter. We cannot support third party products. You would need to contact the manufacture of the device for installation assistance. You may need to determine the serial port communication settings on the printer. To print out the settings, you should run the cancel key test. Click here for instructions.
  1. How do I set my printer up for RS422 or RS485 interfacing?
  2. Printers with serial numbers after 6400356 will need an adaptor installed onto the existing 9 pin serial port. Click here for information.
Printers with serial numbers up to 6400356 are already equipped to handle RS422/RS485 on the existing DB25 serial port. Click here for information.

  3. How do I set my printer up to print via a Network connection?
  4. Network communication is accomplished by connecting to an internally or externally installed print server option. We manufacture such a device called the ZebraNet PrintServer II or ZNet II for short. The ZNet II is designed specifically to work with our printers and  uses the same printer programming language to allow bi-directional communications between the printer and the ZNet II. If you have a ZNet II installed and are having setup issues see our troubleshooting instructions on the web. Click here to go to the ZNet II troubleshooting page for additional information. There are other manufactures of print servers but we do not support connectivity issues if using a third party device.

  5. How do I configure my printer for wireless communications?
  6. Printers with serial numbers after 6400356 can have our wireless option installed.
If you are using the ZebraNet II as part of a wireless solution, you can troubleshoot the ZebraNet II using the troubleshooting page. Click here to go to the ZNet II troubleshooting page.
