What packages are available?

These are the available packages:

How is it protected?

A hardware key protects the product. The key plugs into the computer's or server's parallel port. It operates in a pass-through mode, allowing printing on the parallel port and unlocking the BAR-ONE label design software. A key is required for each product except Lite.

How is it packaged?

The packaging includes:

Can I upgrade from previous versions?

You can upgrade at a discounted price; the special upgrade pricing only applies when you are going from ProPlus-to-ProPlus, Platinum-to-Platinum (single user version), or Platinum-to-Platinum Network 5(multiple user version).  Since Desktop is the replacement to Create a Label, you can upgrade from Create a Label 3 to Desktop.

Upgrades are based on your ability to provide a valid BAR-ONE serial number or proof-of-purchase document showing ownership of either a BAR-ONE 4.3 or 5.0 product package. Eligible products include Desktop, Pro-Plus and Platinum only.

How do I upgrade to BAR-ONE 6.0?

BAR-ONE 6.0 is a different product. You cannot overwrite a previous version.

If you are an ODBC user, read the following:

BAR-ONE 5.0 software and earlier relies on older versions of the Microsoft® ODBC components to connect to databases.  However, 6.0 updates the current ODBC components to enable connections to newer versions of many popular databases.  After BAR-ONE 6.0 is installed there could be issues with previously established database connections.  When 6.0 is installed on a different computer, you avoid potential conflicts that could result from the ODBC updates.  To avoid possible conflicts, Zebra recommends that you install BAR-ONE 6.0 on another computer.  If your computer has Internet Explorer 5.x or Office 2000 installed, the newer ODBC components might already be in use.

What printers are supported?

Most Zebra, Eltron, and Comtec printers. Support is also available for some older Zebra-model printers.  Consult the printer list for more details on printers supported by the different software packages.

What printer features does it support?

It supports all existing printer features.  These include:

If my Zebra printer isn’t listed, what do I do?

You can typically select a comparable printer based on your printer's dpi and the maximum label width the printer allows.  Keep in mind though that certain additional features of particular printers will not function with yours if it does not have same options.  Also, be sure to match correct printer language types like ZPL-to-ZPL, EPL-to-EPL, or CPCL-to-CPCL printers.

How do I add a new printer?

As new printers are developed or features changed, new drivers will become available as printer service packs on our website.

Can it print to non-Zebra printers?

Yes, BAR-ONE 6 can use the Windows driver of that manufacturer’s printer (note: this option is not available in Lite). You should be able to print to a large number of different direct-thermal/thermal-transfer printers and Windows compatible printers even though outputting to those printers has very limited support from us.  This package is a Zebra package designed and tested for use with the Zebra line of printers.

Does it support Windows drivers?

It supports its own built-in drivers for Zebra, Eltron, and Comtec printers.

Does it have print time questions?

In addition to allowing changes to the order in which data is entered and creating masks to validate the data, the form variable can be customized to include colors, highlighting, and different fonts and patterns to make data entry easier.

Can it read .lbl files created by previous versions?

Yes, it converts BAR-ONE 4.3 and 5.0 .lbl files. The new file format is incompatible with the old BAR-ONE format.

The conversion tool also converts Create-a-Label 3.05/3.04 .lbl formats in BAR-ONE version 6.04 and above.

It is not possible to use BAR-ONE 6.0 labels in older versions of the BAR-ONE software like 5.0 and 4.3 or Create-a-Label 3.05/3.04.  They are not backwards compatible.  BAR-ONE 6.0 labels are saved also with a .lab extension, differentiating them from the .lbl format.

It should be noted that these conversions are imperfect and we recommend that you test your old labels with the demo versions of Bar-One 6.04 to see how they will handle the conversions.

Are there limitations converting labels from previous versions?

Yes, the limitations are spelled out in the convert.txt file. Items that cannot be converted are represented on the label as text.

Can labels from previous versions be converted?

In most cases Bar-One 4.3 and 5.0 labels are converted automatically when opened in BAR-ONE 6.0.  See the entry "Can it read .lbl files created by previous versions?", for more information.

Are ODBC links maintained from previous versions?

The ODBC relationships present in previous BAR-ONE connected ODBC labels are not converted, but a representation of the field is displayed without creating an actual ODBC connection.  The ODBC components of BAR-ONE 6.0 are very different from previous versions of BAR-ONE and require the creation of new DSN's (Data Source Names). The file structures between the older versions of BAR-ONE and BAR-ONE 6.0 preclude the conversion of the ODBC connection.

Can I convert labels created with other Zebra software like Barcode Anything, Create-a-Label, or Label Vista software?

At this time you can only convert labels created from certain earlier version of BAR-ONE software.  Those versions are v5.0 and v4.3.

If you have BAR-ONE version 6.04 or above installed, you can also convert Create-a-Label 3.05/3.04 labels.

Does it have its own print program?

The print program feature of BAR-ONE 5.0/4.3 will eventually be replaced with BAR-ONE 6.0 Print Manager, a more feature-rich and robust product.  However, you can run multiple print only windows with Platinum or Print Only on your PC.

Does it support .pj files?

The Command File Mechanism from earlier versions of BAR-ONE 5.0/4.3 is not available.

What happens if the wrong BAR-ONE hardware key is connected to the PC?

If you plug a BAR-ONE hardware key onto your PC that does not match the BAR-ONE software you have installed, a window appears with the message, " LPPA  -  One of the components of this program is corrupted.  Please, install the software again."

Does BAR-ONE support USB printing?

If your PC supports USB printing and has a functional USB port (98SE, ME, 2000, XP) then, yes, BAR-ONE will see and recognize the USB00x port.  However, it must be setup and configured properly in your operating system, and, you need to make sure the printer itself is USB capable and can print through a USB port.  We do not support the use of LPT->USB converters, i.e. the printer itself must have a USB port.  (USB printing is not supported in the Lite version of Bar-One.)

Can it keep track of labels printed?

There is an option in BAR-ONE Platinum and PlatinumNet called the Log File.  Here you can setup a custom text file to track printed labels. You can read more about this option in the following article: Log File

Can you send a string of printer code from the label design program?

Yes, however, you can only send printer code (ZPL, EPL, CPCL) as an initialization string and not in the body of the label.

Is there a Download Label Format feature in BAR-ONE 6.04?

Yes, there is to our EPL based printers.  However, there is no way to recall these labels through Bar-One itself.  More information can be accessed here

What size are BAR-ONE's downloadable demo files?

Where can I purchase it?

Go to Zebra's Web site www.zebra.com at the Reseller Locator page.

Does it support RTC?

Yes, it will support RTC (Real Time Clock) but only on selected Zebra printers with that feature option installed.  More information is available here.

Can I use the hardware key from certain earlier versions of BAR-ONE v4.x or v3.x?

No.  These keys are special keys designed only for use with those earlier versions of BAR-ONE.

What are the minimum recommended system requirements?

Is BAR-ONE supported in a thin client environment?

Zebra does not support this product in the thin client environment.

Can it read competitive PCLs?

Yes. (Excluding Lite)

Currently these are the printer control languages it does import:

Does it support the Zebra R140 RFID?

Yes.  Information on using Bar-One with RFID labels can be accessed here.

Can I use scanning devices?

With the exception of two-dimensional bar codes like PDF-417, Datamatrix, Maxicode, QR Code, most scanners will work. Scanning limitations could be caused by an incorrectly setup scanner, poor printout quality (inkjet and dot matrix produce lesser quality printouts than thermal transfer, direct thermal or laser), or incorrectly designed bar codes.

Does it convert labels into HTML documents?

Yes. Only Platinum and Platinum Network include the HTML Form Generator.

Does it support OLE objects?

Yes it does.

Does it support graphic formats?

Yes. The formats are:

We do recommend, however, that you use a monochrome bitmap graphic file as this type of graphic is most easily converted into code by Bar-One.

What is the maximum labels per batch it supports?

99,999 labels.

What happens when no hardware key is connected?

The program runs in evaluation mode.

Does it support long filenames?

Yes.
